Things You Do and Don’t Need to Bring to School This Fall

With fall semester fast approaching, I asked current college sophomores about their biggest regrets when packing for their freshman dorms. This way, you can save some space and have a more enjoyable first year. Packing for college can be overwhelming, but it’s easier if you know what to prioritize. Here are some tips from students who’ve been through it to help you pack smart and stay comfortable throughout the year.

DO’S

A Fan

Especially if your dorm doesn’t have AC (listen up, Spelman students!), fans will save you from heat waves and uncomfortable nights. Desk fans, standing fans, and window fans are a must for those hotter states.

Coats and Jackets

Coats and jackets take up a lot of space, so people often leave them behind for their cuter summer clothes. Don’t be swayed by upperclassmen; weather can be unpredictable, especially in the fall, and you don’t want to be caught out in the cold.

A Comfortable School Bag

I know it seems like everyone has swapped backpacks for Telfar bags, but backpacks are still essential! A comfortable backpack or canvas bag will save you from back and shoulder pain throughout the semester, trust me.

Cheap Utensils

There will be times when you need a cup, plate, or bowl and can’t find one on campus, so it’s better to bring your own. Many stores sell cheap plastic kitchenware that’s easy to clean. Forks, spoons, and knives are also important, so make sure to get some cheap plastic ones just in case!

All Your Basic School Supplies

Having pens, loose-leaf paper, binders, scissors, and paper clips will be extremely helpful throughout your college career. Even though most assignments are online now, professors will occasionally require pen and paper, especially for midterms and finals. It’s also crucial to keep your papers organized, so having storage is a big help.

DON’TS

A Printer

Most campuses have printers available for free, so you can skip the expense of buying a printer and ink, which can be pricey. Plus, with most college work being digital, a laptop is far more essential than a printer.

Your Entire Closet

Dorm room storage is limited, especially with a roommate. Bringing your whole closet is unrealistic, and you probably won’t see half of those clothes until you’re moving out for the summer. To make things easier when you head home, bring only the items you know you’ll wear. Bringing too many clothes is the difference between paying for oversized luggage and traveling with just a carry-on.

A Headboard

Many students regret bringing a headboard, as it often falls because the hooks can’t support the weight. Big pillows can be a more comfortable alternative that does less damage to walls and paint.

A Water Filter

Parents often think a Brita filter is essential, but a Brita water bottle is more convenient and easier to refill.

An Ice Maker

You’ll likely find an ice maker somewhere on campus for free! It might be more convenient to have one in your room, but an ice tray works just as well and takes up less space.

Naturally, what you should and shouldn’t bring depends on the school’s location, your major, how new your dorm is, and other factors. Use this list to simplify your prep and make sure you’ve got space for the stuff that really counts.
