Halloween Costumes... But Make It Black

You might be thinking, “It’s early October, why should I worry about my Halloween costume now?” But let’s be real—every year, you say you're going to plan a killer costume, but end up throwing together a last-minute look (Playboy bunnies and cowboys, I’m calling y’all out).

We're getting you prepped early this time, so there’s no excuse when Halloween rolls around. Seriously, it's time to stop pouring fake blood all over your clothes and calling it "scary."

This year, we’re showing up and showing out in costumes inspired by Black culture. There are so many iconic references to embody this spooky season, so for my indecisive (and Black) folks like me, I’ve curated a list of Halloween costume inspiration just for us.

  1. Garnet from Steven Universe

Talk about a strong Black woman! Garnet, the main character from the Cartoon Network show Steven Universe, is the fusion of two Gems, Ruby and Sapphire. She’s tall, powerful (definitely stallion status), and symbolizes unity, love, and self-acceptance.

This costume may require some DIY skills, but with the right materials and a perfectly picked fro (bonus points if you already rock one), you’ll be a guaranteed show-stopper.

2. Spider-Punk from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

It’s Spider-Man, but dare I say—cooler. Spider-Punk, also known as Hobart "Hobie" Brown, is an alternate-universe Spider-Man with heavy punk rock energy.

If you’re feeling that edgy, rebellious spirit, this costume is for you. Not to mention the dope accessories—from eyebrow piercings to freeform locs, it’s the perfect look for anyone with an alt vibe.

3. Clovers Cheerleader from Bring It On

This costume needs no introduction—it’s a cultural staple in the Black community, and for good reason. I mean, when else can you rock a mini skirt and crop top in late October and get away with it? It’s the perfect way to serve baddie energy while paying homage to a classic pop culture moment.

4. A Pimp Named Slick back from The Boondocks

Fellas! Now’s your chance to show off your true playa. If you’re looking for a costume that’s sure to get some laughs, dressing up as this outrageous personality is a valid option.

5. Catwoman

When I think about sexy Halloween costumes, Halle Berry’s portrayal of Catwoman always comes to mind. She embodied dark feminine energy, and her outfit—featuring a cross-body cut-out top and leather leggings adorned with cat claws—ate down! Trust me, you can’t go wrong as Catwoman.

6. Frozone from The Incredibles

“Honey, where’s my supersuit?!?!” For all my 2000s babies out there, you know this iconic line. Frozone, the effortlessly cool hero from The Incredibles, had us all cracking up with his smooth one-liners and ice-cold abilities. If you're looking to channel some of that sleek, nostalgic superhero energy this Halloween, Frozone is the perfect choice. Bonus points if you get someone to play your honey!

7.  Numbuh Five from Codename: Kids Next Door

Put a finger down if you watched Codename: Kids Next Door as a kid! If you remember this Cartoon Network show and its funky characters, then you definitely know how cool Numbah Five was. With her signature red hat, gold hoops, and oversized blue tee, this costume is not only easy to put together but also instantly recognizable!

8. Luffy from One Piece

Now, you might be wondering how this ties into Black culture—but, hear me out. Anime has become a huge phenomenon within the Black community over the years. Chances are, if you're reading this, you either know a Black weeb or are one yourself.

Luffy deserves a spot on this list not just for his cultural relevance but for the simplicity and distinctiveness of his outfit. Take a quick trip to the thrift store and you can easily recreate his look.

Hopefully, this list sparked some inspiration for your Halloween costume! It’s time to ditch the cat ears and vampire fangs and try something new this year!
