10 Things HBCU Students Are Looking Forward To This Darty Season

Walking on sunshine hits differently during the spring at any HBCU. Aside from the pollen, the smell of barbecue in the air will have you dancing to “Before I Let Go” without a care. From good vibes to great music, we're breaking down the top ten things HBCU students look forward to during day party season.

What HBCU Students Are Looking Forward to During Darty Season:

10. A Quiet Campus

To my surprise, after surveying HBCU students, some were excited to have the campus to themselves. Nyla Cross, a second-year student at Hampton University, says she’s excited to “do yoga on the waterfront because all y’all are gone.”

9. Good Eats

From hot dogs and potato salad to burgers fresh off the grill, there’s nothing like a great meal after a long day in the sun. And let's not forget about the bonding over generational recipes and heated food debates. At the end of the day, the real question is: would you eat just anybody's mac & cheese?

8. Braids

Protective styles are a must, especially when you’re in the middle of a humid party. Cornrows, knotless boho braids, and passion twists are all darty essentials. When the sun comes out, not having to worry about leave-out or lifting lace just makes the fun so much better.

7. Pictures

New season, new feed! Chelsea, a second-year student at Hampton University, says she’s looking forward to “taking pictures with friends.” And she's got a point—it's the best way to capture memories and add decorations to your dorm wall!

6. New Friends

Passionately reciting lyrics to “Dreams and Nightmares” or “Itty Bitty Piggy” with someone you don't know can easily turn into a friendship. Darty season is one of the best times to socialize and add new people to your friend group.

5. Drinks

From Jungle Juice and Que Oil to straight shots, the best drinks are always in rotation. A second-year student from FAMU says, “I can’t wait to get lit. It only takes a little liquid courage.” Just make sure you drink responsibly and don’t forget to hydrate!

4. Fits

Getting dressed at an HBCU is like an Olympic sport. When it comes to how we express ourselves, we don’t come to play. Whether you’re coming fitted or putting on something chill, owning your style—without the weight of a heavy puffer—is one of the best parts of the season.

3. Music

A great party is only as good as its playlist. Whether you’re ready to turn up or scream about love at the top of your lungs, the music’s got you. Artists like Sexyy Red, Rob49, Glorilla, and BossMan Dlow always know how to get everyone in a party mood.

2. Warm Weather

After months of hibernating in those twin XLs, when the sun comes out, so does everyone else. Jordan Hamilton, a second-year student at Hampton University, says she loves “seeing all the baddies on campus flourish.” Plus, you know what they say—sun’s out, buns out.

1. The Parties

Of course, we can’t forget about the darties themselves! The day parties that commence right after class are all anyone looks forward to on HBCU campuses. The skirts and white tees come out, and the stress slowly melts away.
