If you’re in the mood for novels that move you to tears or personal stories filled with laughter and nostalgia, we've got you covered with this list! Here are ten must-read books penned by Black authors.

  1. The Bluest Eye - Toni Morrison

This novel follows a young Black girl named Pecola Breedlove, whose one wish is to have blue eyes. Constantly put down for having dark skin, Pecola believes that her life would be easier if she had “white” features. This powerful story also tackles family trauma, harmful beauty standards, and self-image. You might need to keep some tissue on hand while reading this one.

2. Invisible Man - Ralph Ellison

Set in 1930s America, this introspective novel follows a Black man who feels invisible. As he moves through his personal and professional life, he grapples with prejudice and racist stereotypes. The narrator’s vivid, hyper-detailed storytelling creates a trippy, surreal experience. Trust, you’re in for a while ride with this read!

3. The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl - Issa Rae

Our good sis Issa Rae isn’t just a producer and actress; she’s an amazing storyteller too! This hilarious memoir gets real about her life growing up as a socially awkward Black girl. Rae covers everything from her natural hair journey to being a devout foodie—(she even spills the tea on her dating history!). Not only is this book an autobiography, but it’s a love letter to all the introverted Black girls

4. Monster - Walter Dean Myers

This is a tragic tale of a Black teenager on trial for murder, capturing his life behind bars as he documents his experiences. Through a diary-style format that unfolds like a real-time screenplay, the story explores the devastating impact of racial profiling on Black men and their futures. The book was also adapted into a film, which is now streaming on Netflix!

5. Memphis - Tara M. Stringfellow

In her beautifully written debut, Tara M. Stringfellow tells the story of the women in the North family, spanning three generations. Tackling themes of generational trauma, love, and poverty Tara M. Stringfellow does a great job celebrating the strength and resilience of Black women as they face many of life’s challenges.

6. Don't Cry for Me - Daniel Black

This poignant read is told through a series of letters written by Jacob, a father on his deathbed, trying to make amends with his estranged, gay son, Isaac. The writing is raw and filled with emotions; a recipe for an impactful novel.

7. You Made a fool of death with your beauty - Akwaeke Emezi

Whew chile, this was a messy read! The story follows the main character Feyi, who starts dating again after grieving the loss of her husband who died in a tragic car crash. All I can say is, this book was pretty unhinged.

8. Deacon King Kong - James McBride

Deacon King Kong takes place in the housing projects of south Brooklyn. James McBride tells the captivating story of Sportcoat, a 71-year-old deacon and drunk who shoots a young drug lord in broad daylight. This novel explores the aftermath of the shooting, while also exploring larger themes of the effects of racism on small Black communities.

9. First Things First: Hip-Hop Ladies Who Changed The Game - Nadirah Simmons

Throughout this witty book, Nadirah Simmons breaks down the “firsts” of the many women who shaped hip-hop culture. From covering record-breaking female rappers like Lauryn Hill and first Black magazine editors like Danyel Smith, Simmons celebrates the accomplishments of women in hip-hop. The chapters are aesthetically pleasing, arranged like an album tracklist with interludes. If you’re a rap head, this is the perfect book for you!

10. Seven Days In June - Tia Williams

Spicy book lovers, WYA? Eva, an erotic novelist and single mom, finds herself caught up in a rekindled romance with her teenage fling, Shane. The writing is so funny and laid-back, that it almost feels like watching an episode of Insecure. Seven Days In June is a modern love story that’s sexy, freeing, and full of all the beautiful, messy layers of Black love.
